The PHP Anthology: Object Oriented PHP Solutions (volumn I + volumn II + source code)

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 03:23 PM PDT

"The PHP Anthology: Object Oriented PHP Solutions" by Harry Fuecks
Volume I | Publisher: SitePoint | December 2003 | ISBN: 0957921853 | PDF | 4.44 Mb | 376 Pages
Volume II | Publisher: SitePoint | December 2003 | ISBN: 0957921845 | PDF | 3.77 Mb | 392 Pages

As a PHP developer, there are certain problems you're almost guaranteed to face. Generating charts and graphs, converting HTML documents to PDF format—PHP is equipped to handle all of these, but coming up with the best implementation can be tricky! Now, instead of trawling through message boards and mailing lists for the answer, you can just crack open The PHP Anthology!

The PHP Anthology is a complete reference guide for any PHP developer --hobbyist or professional-- to help you write better, faster and more secure code that solves common problems. The author, Harry Fuecks, has compiled over 100 best-practice solutions that any developer will find invaluable when building content management systems, intranets, shopping carts or anything else.

Volume 1 covers the foundations of PHP including writing portable and reusable code, storing and extracting data from files, manipulating text, working with email and error handling.

Volume 2 covers the applications of PHP in the real world including authentication & access control, XML, stats & tracking, caching data to improve performance, design techniques and design patterns. The chapter on Design Patterns is particularly unique as it teaches readers about common object architectures which can be used to solve common (though unique) problems.

Jan Parberry, "Problems on Algorithms,2 Ed"
Dover Publications | 2007 | ISBN: 0486458717 | PDF | 272 pages | 2,1 MB

Too often the problem sets in standard algorithm texts are composed of small, idiosyncratic units of busy-work and irrelevant questions -- forcing instructors into the time-consuming task of finding or composing additional problems. Designed to fill that gap, this supplement provides an extensive and varied collection of useful, practical problems on the design, analysis, and verification of algorithms.

Network Management, MIBs and MPLS: Principles, Design and Implementation

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 11:57 AM PDT

Network Management, MIBs and MPLS: Principles, Design and Implementation
Prentice Hall PTR | 416 pages | 2003 | ISBN: 0131011138 | PDF | 1.6 mb

Mr. Morris has done a great job of taking network management concepts and burrowing down into the details of how it all actually works. He lifts the haze of confusion that often surrounds MIBs and their implementation in NMS applications, and then ties in one of the hot new network technologies, MPLS, so that one can see how network management actually works with this and other IP-based protocols. Good job! Its a good book overall but there was lot of topics this book fails to cover.
Pros.
* Explaining standard MPLS mibs.
* Lot of material good for beginner
* SNMP code
* Sample buildout of a simple MPLS network
* Only chapter that is useful is Chapter 8 and a bit in 9.
Cons.
* Explaining standard MIBs just on the froth, no in depth analyis or things like relationships between MIB values in different tables.
* Only few chapters useful for a person already in OSS domain.
* SNMP code again is for beginners and they are a big eyewash.
* The book has been stretched out to write 300 odd pages. Not worth the cost.
* Chapters 5,6,7 were not useful.
I recomend this book for absolute novices in this area. And to others the book is not worth the money you will pay for.
BTW. MPLS Network management from Thomas Nadeau is a lot better.

Professional ASP.NET Web Forms Techniques

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 11:56 AM PDT

"Professional ASP.NET Web Forms Techniques" by Alex Homer
Publisher: Wrox Press Ltd | 10 Nov 2002 | ISBN: 1861007868 | PDF | 18.06 Mb | 570 Pages

This book examines the possibilities for developing user interfaces that are driven by ASP.NET. It discusses and explores a range of techniques and approaches predominantly for creating Web sites and Web pages that are:

Intuitive and easy to use
Attractive and full-featured
Interactive where this is appropriate
Based (loosely) on a real-world scenario
Designed according to a predefined set of requirements
Fun, memorable, and provide user satisfaction

The pages we build are, for the most part, elements of an overall application that - while being somewhat optimistic as regards consumer buying patterns - does form the basis for the kind of Web site/application that is becoming one of the basic ingredients of the World Wide Web today. We'll be building a site that allows the user to choose, customize and purchase a new car or truck from the world-famous "Wrox Car Company"

CUPS: Common UNIX Printing System (Sams White Book)

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 10:39 AM PDT

CUPS: Common UNIX Printing System (Sams White Book) By Michael Sweet
Publisher: Sams 2001-09-07 | 648 Pages | ISBN: 0672321963 | PDF | 3.1 MB

The Common UNIX Printing System is quickly becoming the standard printing solution for Linux. This book provides you with detailed instructions on using, administering, and programming for the Common UNIX Printing System. In addition to the CUPS software, this book includes information and online downloads of many popular add-ons to CUPS that provide enhanced graphical interfaces and printer drivers.

One of the problems with Unix is its spotty support for printers. Before the advent of the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), a particular printer needed a driver for, say, System V Unix, and a separate driver for FreeBSD. The problem has become particularly pronounced now that Linux is becoming more popular as a desktop operating system, where it competes with Windows and other operating systems under which printer installation is pretty easy. CUPS installs on all major Unix and Linux flavors, and handles the interface between printer and operating system. Driver writers can, therefore, write for CUPS and not worry about what's underneath. CUPS: Common Unix Printing System is first on the scene with CUPS documentation for installers, administrators, users, and programmers. It represents good work and is a worthwhile guide and reference that goes beyond freely available online documentation.

Some readers may be disappointed that certain procedural parts of this book--notably that which has to do with compiling CUPS into the Unix kernel from source code--are exclusively Linux based. You can extrapolate other Unix flavors' procedures from the Unix instructions, but explicit how-to information would be nice. However, explanatory information on the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP, on which CUPS is based) is nicely written, and the CUPS documentation itself--particularly the instructions for developing printer drivers (in C) is excellent. Read this if you want to develop printer drivers for what's likely to become a standard on consumer Linux distributions. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) and the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) that underlies it. Though CUPS installation and its user interface are covered, the real value of this book is in the author's picking apart of IPP transactions and the CUPS API for programmers writing printer drivers. The drivers section devotes special attention to HP PCL and PostScript document handling.

Enhancing Microsoft Content Management Server with ASP.NET 2.0

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 08:56 AM PDT

The release of Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) Service Pack 2 opens up the world of ASP.NET 2.0 to MCMS developers. Written by the masters of MCMS, this book shows you how to use the new features of ASP.NET 2.0 that everyone is talking about in your MCMS development. You will first learn how to install and configure MCMS SP2. There are two approaches to setting up a development environment for SP2: an upgrade from a previous SP1a installation or starting from scratch and building a fresh installation including SP2. Of course, both approaches are covered. You will become familiar with the MCMS Service Pack 2 development environment, and create custom Visual Studio 2005 templates to overcome some of the issues which are present with the templates shipped with MCMS SP2. After that, its time to look at some of the most exciting features of ASP.NET 2.0, and how you can make use of them in MCMS: master pages, site navigation, themes, and the membership provider model. One of the coolest features introduced with ASP.NET 2.0 is master pages, which allow developers to enforce common layout and behaviour across pages within an application. You will learn about the benefits of using master pages and see a step-by-step guide for implementing them in your MCMS applications, where they become master templates! ASP.NET 2.0 introduces a whole new way of implementing site navigation, driven by site maps. By programmatically adding channels and postings to a site map you will see how to smoothly integrate these controls to any MCMS site. To customize the look of your site, we will see how a common look and feel can be applied efficiently to a MCMS site by using ASP.NET 2.0 themes. An essential customization required for themes to work correctly in an MCMS site is a must-read feature of this chapter. MCMS has its own role based authorization and user management system which cannot be extended. However, the new ASP.NET 2.0 Membership Provider Model and the shipped controls can be used within MCMS applications to improve the implementation of Forms Authentication and provide a more elegant solution for authenticating against an external store. A collection of tips and tricks round off the book, including using the Provider Model design pattern to ease migration to Office SharePoint Portal Server.
